The generation department at PJM is at the forefront of innovation in the power generation industry. Our mission is to maintain grid reliability through ensuring reliable power delivery from generators of various technologies. We are seeking a dynamic candidate with extensive experience in generation operations to join our growing team and lead our efforts in managing the evolving resource mix.
As a Principal Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the operation and maintenance of the power generation facilities in PJM's footprint. You will be responsible for ensuring the optimal performance, reliability, and efficiency of our power generators. Your expertise will be crucial in driving continuous improvement initiatives with industry stakeholders and maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulations.
The Generation Department personnel are considered to be PJM's subject matter experts on generation activities, support for generator operational data requirements, resolution of operational issues, generation outage planning, generation performance monitoring (GPM and reactive testing), hydro scheduling and coordination, load forecasting, wind forecasting, automatic generation control (AGC) support and generation related ancillary market support including black start services, and generator compliance issues. Department personnel provide on-call technical support for PJM's 24x7 Dispatch function and support the needs of PJM's generation owners in meeting their goals and objectives.
Essential Functions:
Operational Leadership
Manage day to day generator outage request process with an eye on enhancements to improve efficiency and evolving resource adequacy landscape.
Developing PJM generator operations and reporting requirements.
Establishing metrics to evaluate generation performance and working with generation owners to implement strategies to increase efficiency.
Provide technical guidance and support to generation team to tackle complex generation related problems and facilitate innovative solutions.
Stakeholder Engagement
Lead coordination efforts with generation owners and associated agents to reinforce expectations and compliance with PJM requirements.
Represent PJM interests related to generator operations with industry representatives, including updates to standards and rules.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on large-scale initiatives, driving towards progress with a clear and well-articulated vision.
Sharing knowledge and expertise to develop others and increase overall level of understanding.
Characteristics and Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience
Experience with generator operations
At least 5 years of work experience with overseeing generator compliance with industry requirements
At least 10 years working in the power industry or a related field
Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail
Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis
Ability to communicate effectively in a team environment
Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support
Experience with generator components and functions
Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory
Ability and desire to build relationships and interact with a wide range of stakeholders and staff to maintain and enhance PJM's customer service reputation
Preferred:
MS degree in Engineering & 5 years experience with overseeing generator compliance with industry requirements
At least 5 years working directly with generator operations
At least 5 years interfacing with regulators/outside entities on compliance related activities
Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
